Background Questions:
1) What does your character do by daylight?
In the very beginning, Reese is unhoused and trying to drink himself to death. Nautis sets him up with an apartment and money for food once she recruits him. At that point, he considers it his duty to monitor for Abyss sightings and respond to them as soon as Nautis lets him know anyone is in danger. He will get a job eventually.
2) What are they fighting for?
To make his life mean something.
3) Who matters most to them?
All his friends are dead. He doesn’t have any significant relationships now. He used to have Jessica, his girlfriend before he went into black ops. She was kind and sweet, a genuinely good person, and John loved her very much before she was killed and it soured him on the idea of civilian life. He also had Kara, his partner, but she was very different person from Jessica. She was his senior on their two-man team and she loved her black ops work. She had the confidence and lack of moral compass to kill people without hesitation and she taught John to do so too. She (and Jessica’s death) helped destroy every ideal he had about protecting people and doing good and instead turned him into a trained killer with no remorse before she shot him him in the back on their last mission. He’s completely adrift when Nautis finds him and gives him a purpose.
4) How did they get to now?
He was in the Army, then got recruited into the AIS (Atlace Intelligence Service). While he was away on missions, Jessica died mysteriously and it hardened him and allowed him to do terrible things while in spec ops. However, the AIS betrayed him on his last mission and he managed to escape and wash up on Chalra City’s shores, with no identity, no friends, and no purpose. He’d been living in the underground ever since until Nautis picked him up.

1) What would make your character happiest or fulfilled?
Reese wants a clear purpose to his life more than anything else. He wants to be able to use his skills to make people’s lives better.
2) What does your character fear the most?
He fears that he’ll never get to balance out all the evil he’s done in his life by saving people.
3) What does your character think their greatest strength is? What is their actual greatest strength?
Reese thinks his greatest strength is his ability to do violence but it’s actually how loyal and determined he is to do the right thing.

Awakening: He passed out drunk and had a dream about his last mission where his partner shot him in the back and then died herself. His overwhelming feelings of despair and helplessness jogged his memory of his past life’s dying wish.

1) What was their past life’s role on The Nashira? What kind of life did they lead on Hassaleh before their exodus?
Reese was a royal guard who accidentally ended up on the Nashira because he incorrectly thought the person he was supposed to be protecting was there. They told him they were on the ship so he would get off world and be saved. It’s his biggest shame that he wasn’t able to die doing his duty to protect the royal family, even if he does appreciate what was done for him.
2) What, if anything, about their past life has echoes in their current life?
His sense of failure, of being worthless, of not being able to do his duty.
3) What was their past life’s dying wish?
To complete the task he was trained to do—to protect people.
